Keeping Alexandria clean, safe, and welcoming is a shared responsibility. Every property owner plays an important role in maintaining homes, businesses, sidewalks, and outdoor spaces. Together, these small efforts help protect property values, keep public infrastructure working properly, and preserve the small-town character that makes Alexandria a great place to live.
Here are a few simple ways you can help:
Maintain your sidewalks. Property owners are responsible for keeping sidewalks in good repair and clear of grass, weeds, loose gravel, and other obstructions that may create a safety hazard.
Keep grass clippings out of the street. When mowing, avoid blowing grass into the roadway where clippings can wash into storm drains and interfere with drainage.
Trim trees and shrubs. Keep vegetation from overhanging sidewalks so pedestrians can safely use public walkways.
Lend a hand after a snowfall. After significant snowfall, clearing snow around the fire hydrant nearest your property can save valuable time during an emergency.

If you believe a property may not be complying with Village zoning regulations, you can also report a potential violation for review by the Village Zoning Inspector.
Property Maintenance Guidelines
These are some of the most common standards that apply throughout the Village.
Vehicles
Disabled vehicles may not remain on residential or commercial property for more than two weeks unless stored inside an enclosed building.
Vehicles without current license plates may not be stored outdoors on residentially zoned property. One currently licensed boat and one currently licensed travel trailer may be stored in a rear yard.
Fences
Fences require a permit before installation.
Property owners are responsible for keeping fences:
• Structurally sound
• In good repair
• Properly finished
• Free of leaning or damaged sections
• Maintained on both sides
Trash & Refuse
Commercial, industrial, and multi-family developments must screen dumpster and trash collection areas from public view unless located inside a building.
All property owners should properly dispose of trash and debris and avoid conditions that create health or safety concerns.
Property Appearance
Property owners are encouraged to keep their property clean and well maintained by:
• Removing accumulated debris
• Maintaining outdoor areas
• Caring for fences and accessory
structures
• Keeping storage areas orderly
• Addressing conditions that negatively
affect neighboring properties
Nuisances
Property may not be used in a manner that creates conditions harmful to neighboring properties or the public.
Examples include:
• Excessive noise
• Smoke or odors
• Dust or air pollution
• Glare
• Unsafe conditions
• Other activities that create a nuisance
Farm Animals
Residents keeping approved small farm animals must maintain clean, sanitary conditions that minimize odors, insects, rodents, and excessive noise.
