Tree Partnership Program
Growing Alexandria's Tree Canopy Together
The Village of Alexandria's Tree Partnership Program gives residents, families, businesses, and organizations meaningful ways to help grow and care for Alexandria's tree canopy. Trees improve our public spaces, provide shade, enhance neighborhoods, and contribute to the small-town character that makes Alexandria special. The program also provides opportunities to honor loved ones, celebrate milestones, and make a lasting contribution to the community.
The Village coordinates tree selection, planting locations, installation, records, and ongoing care for trees planted through the program. Whether you'd like to plant a tree near your home, honor someone with a memorial tree, or simply support future tree planting in Alexandria, there's a way to participate.
We are happy to help you learn more about the Tree Partnership Program and find the option that's right for you.
1. Plant a Neighborhood Street Tree
Residents can partner with the Village to plant a street tree in the public right-of-way near their property. The resident contributes $200 per tree, and the Village provides the remaining cost of purchasing, planting, and establishing the tree. Residents who participate agree to help care for their tree by providing supplemental watering during the first two growing seasons, protecting it from damage, and notifying the Village if they have concerns.
The Village will:
Review and approve planting locations
Check for underground utilities
Select an approved tree species
Arrange for planting and installation
Provide long-term maintenance and pruning
Trees planted through the program remain public Village assets.
2. Memorial & Honor Trees
A tree can be a meaningful way to remember someone, recognize an accomplishment, or celebrate an important milestone. Individuals, families, businesses, organizations, and friends can sponsor a tree in memory or honor of:
A loved one
Someone who served the community
A retirement, anniversary, or graduation
An individual who made a lasting contribution to Alexandria
The sponsorship amount is $300 per tree. An optional recognition plaque is available for an additional $50. The Village will select an appropriate location and tree species, coordinate planting, and provide ongoing care.
3. Support Alexandria's Tree Fund
You don't have to choose a specific tree or location to support Alexandria's tree program. Residents, businesses, civic organizations, and community groups can make a donation to the Village Tree Fund. Donations help support future tree planting and beautification projects throughout the community.
Donations may help fund:
Memorial Grove plantings
Trees in parks and public spaces
Street tree planting and replacement
Community beautification
Arbor Day and community forestry activities
Suggested giving levels include:
Seedling Sponsor: $50–$99
Sapling Sponsor: $100–$249
Community Canopy Sponsor: $250–$499
Legacy Sponsor: $500+
Every contribution helps Alexandria grow a healthier and more beautiful community.
