Ohio villages operate under a system set by state law -- responsibilities are shared so that decisions are made publicly and with input from several officials. Village Council is responsible for making local laws, approving the village budget, and deciding how village money can be spent. Council members discuss and vote on these matters during public meetings.

The Mayor helps carry out the work of the village. The mayor presides over council meetings, helps guide discussion, and oversees many day-to-day village operations and employees. In most cases, the mayor only votes if council members are tied.

Village government works through teamwork and shared responsibility. Council makes decisions about policies and spending, while the mayor and village staff help carry out those decisions and provide services to the community. This system helps ensure that no single person makes decisions alone.
